RESNA 1999 in Long Beach, CA
by Louise Calderan, Assistant Director, MD TAP
As part of my duties here at TAP, I am forced to travel to such exotic locales as Long Beach, CA to attend meetings. It’s a grueling job, but someone has to do it. The California climate is not new to me, having lived along the coast back in the ‘70’s. However, I had forgotten that the morning fog would roll in and sit there, and would usually burn off. Or sometimes, perhaps not. You never knew what kind of day you were going to have. Overall, the weather during the conference was very sunny and cool. Near perfect. I had the good fortune in having a 7th Floor view overlooking the Inner Harbor. The Queen Mary is docked on the far side of the Harbor. The Aquarium is on the far side of the parking lot, along the harbor (right side). That is where we had a night to ourselves and a lively band and refreshments.

The conference was filled with many wonderful sessions. The problem, as always, were the scheduling conflicts.
Alexandra Enders, President of RESNA, gave a witty, upbeat and motivating talk to keep us moving in the right direction as we approach a new age of technological advancements.

Highlights of the session included a blind, Hispanic comedian, Alex Valdez, who presented a warm, humorous look at himself, his disabilities and human nature. He reminded us that we need to take care of each other, now, and on into the new millenium.

We were entertained also by a group of young men and women playing percussion instruments to a more native rhythm and beat. They escorted us from the opening ceremony down to the exhibit hall. It was quite exhilarating (and loud!).

There were the usual exhibitors, and the infamous Cushioning Contest. This brought about some unusual reactions from participants.

All in all, another fine conference from RESNA. Look forward to Orlando next year!
