"If you build it ...they will come. "
April 23,1998
Imagine a world without music; imagine a world without the sound of a loved one's voice; imagine a world where no one speaks your language - not your doctor, not your teachers, not your boss; imagine the isolation of knowing only your own thoughts. Then, perhaps , for a brief moment , you will understand what it is like to be deaf or, as do most of us, you will think it inconceivable to live in a world without communication.
Communication makes our world accessible to us. It makes us accessible to each other. But, what if you are deaf in a hearing world... or what if you are hearing in a deaf world? Shouldn't you have the right to expect communication accessibility from your employer, your school, your health care provider ?
The Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 made changes to law ensuring communication accessibility for disabled persons. But it is the Communication Specialist, the Sign Language Interpreter who bridges the gap between the hearing and deaf worlds.
Diane Chambers is a Certified Sign Language Interpreter, who, for the past 17 years, has been building bridges. She is the President of Flying Hands, a company which specializes in providing Sign Language Interpreters (and now) audio describers for the entertainment industry. Diane has interpreted for Patti Labelle in concert, as well as Etta James and Mary Chapin Carpenter. She provides sign language artists at Center Stage and the Baltimore Arena.
Diane Chambers also enjoys the status of being a published author. This July her book, "Communication in Sign; Creative Ways to Learn ASL", published by simon And Schuster, will be available in bookstores across the United States.
Flying Hands offers a wide variety of services and workshops including: Sensitivity Awareness Training, Workshops for Young Audiences, The Impact of Body Language, and Understanding Deafness in the Work place. Performing artist and others enjoy learning signs which enhance their creative connection with audiences and colleagues.
Diane's energy, creativity, and progressive thinking fuel Flying Hands. "If you build it ... they will come.", she says. In fact, if in addition to the programs Flying Hands already offers, you seek a service addressing communication accessibility specific to the needs of your organization or group , Diane Chambers and Flying Hands will build it for you.
