Mayor's Commission on Disabilities

Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke's Commission on Disabilities is pleased to announce its Third Annual Mayor's Awards for Excellence in Employment. Through the awards program, the Commission seeks to recognize those companies and individuals who demonstrate a Commitment to economic equality for people with disabilities and to the spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). This year the Commission will present a special award in celebration of the spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act. This year's awards luncheon will also feature a special musical program celebrating the Baltimore Bicentennial.

The Commission will be presenting awards to entities and individuals in the following four categories:

  1. Baltimore City Employer of the Year, to be given to a City department or agency;
  2. Employer of the Year to be awarded to a private sector organization located in Baltimore;
  3. Baltimore City Employee of the Year, recognizing an outstanding City employee with a disability; and
  4. Employee of the Year, honoring an outstanding employee with a disability who works for a business in Baltimore City

The deadline for submission of nomination materials is Monday, September 8, 1997. The Commission will honor the award recipients at a special award ceremony in conjunction with October, National Disability Employment Month. This awards luncheon will be held Thursday, October 16, 1997 in the Curran conference room, City Hall, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Persons interested in making nominations should contact the office of the Mayor's Commission on Disabilities at 396-9944. Ms. Gaynell Colburn and Dr. Nollie P. Wood, Jr. are the Chair and Executive Director of the Commission, respectively.

Halloween Costume Bull Roast

Plan ahead for Halloween fun with A Halloween Costume Bull Roast, to benefit the students attending the Baer School. On Friday, October 31, 1997 at Martin's West. The cost is $35 per person and you may contact the Baer School for tickets, at (410)396-0833 or (410)396-0834. Music is by Sir Andre, and there will be prizes for costumes.

Medicare AAC Device Funding to be Challenged in '97

A nation-wide legal challenge in the US is expected to be initiated later in 1997 to compel Medicare to cover AAC devices. Anyone who has been told - orally or in writing - that Medicare does not, or will not, cover AAC devices may wish to contact:
