Hear Our Voices: August 25

The Maryland Disabilities Forum (MDF) has recently announced the date and place of its latest event. Given the title "Hear Our Voice, Part I", the event will be held on Monday, August 25, 1997, from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM, at the Inner Harbor Hyatt Regency. (find address)

Governor Parris Glendening will be the keynote speaker and policy makers from numerous State agencies have been invited to participate in open discussion with consumers.

A flyer for the event has been designed and is being circulated to MDF's mailing list and through regular distribution points.

MDF has also produced a brochure, listing its Mission, Eleven Principles and MDF's successful endeavors over its term of existence. You can get a copy of the brochure by calling the MDF, care of MCIL Resources for Independent Living, contact number 410-444-4100.

One of MDF's latest ventures has been in negotiation with the MTA, for better service through the paratransit program for persons with disabilities. Numerous complaints were raised, by patrons of the program, when a new subcontractor, Metro Access of Maryland, began providing questionable service during its startup period. Some of the problems were addressed, while others linger on. MDF, in a recent meeting with MTA officials, aired grievances and await reports on the outcome of the promises made for action by MTA officials.

MDF in association with Access Maryland, a legal whip for persons with disabilities has asked for information, from patrons of the paratransit program or their families, on incidents of dangerous, poor or no service by Metro Access. A complaint form is being circulated by MDF. Patrons may also contact Mr. Tim Hagedorn of Access Maryland, at 410-727-6352 to receive the complaint form.

MDF has moved its office, along with MCIL Resources for Independent Living, to
5807 Harford Rd,
Baltimore, MD 21214.

New contact numbers are 410-444-1400, Fax 410-444-0823 and TTY 1-800-735-8522.
