By Peter MooreHistory was made on Tuesday July 1, 1997. It was the day that the British Empire gave Hong Kong back to the Government of China.
There was the usual celebration of fireworks, dancing, parades and celebrities riding on floats. The celebrities are well known not only in Hong Kong, but also in Beijing, and throughout China. People in Hong Kong were cheering wildly and expressing their feelings about not having to live under the rules and laws of England. Now they can live under the laws of China and enjoy the rights that they have been denied for 156 years.
All the top leaders from Beijing as well as Prince Charles were there, and the ceremony of lowering the Union Jack and the raising of the flag of China took on the appearance of military and diplomatic procedure.
The Communist Government of China reassures and promise to respect and protect Hong Kong's economy and freedom of the press. I, for one, cannot trust the government in keeping their promise. If you look at the history of that form of government you would see a violent and brutal path the Communists have taken.
In 1949 there was a huge crackdown by the Communist regime. Those resisted were either shot or imprisoned. But you would hear someone say that was in the past; "BIG DEAL!". True, but let us not forget the Pro-Democracy demonstration that took place not too long ago. A lot of students: men, women and children, let their voice be heard. But only to be silenced by the Army. Even the statue was brought down by the army.
China had their war games recently and had everyone concerned that their ships were firing missiles extremely close to Taiwan.
I still remember my history of how Hitler, wanting peace, turned right around and invaded Poland to start World War II. Every time he talked of wanting peace he invaded another country.
Maybe China needs to look back to the days when Japan invaded and controlled China. They asked for our help in fighting Japan and to liberate them. Now it seem China's doing the exact same thing of denying her people the rights given them by God. This includes the right to be free to choose to be "sober or drunk." To form opinions without fear of being shot or falsely imprisoned for their beliefs.
I see trouble over the horizon for the people of Hong Kong. We had Civil War over a century ago. Now I see the same thing in years to come.
Hitler's ability in communications spoke to all Germans in the early 1930's of good times ahead, the people however were only to deceived by his madness and his cronies.
If the people are not careful or alert to what the Communists are doing, all I see is hardship down the road. If we don't learn from the past, we're bound to repeat again, only it'll be a much harsher lessons to learn.
