Motivation Workshops:

Helping People To Achieve Their Goals

by Gregg J. Donaldson

Have you wanted to achieve a dream in your life and thought it impossible? Or have you started a task and things keep getting in the way of you completing it? Sounds familiar doesn't it? We've all had that happen to us. Right?

Here's another situation: What if a friend gives you short notice and asks you to come on a trip with him/her. It could be just a weekend trip. A trip to Hawaii, or some foreign country you have always wanted to visit. Would you go? What is stopping you from going?

These are just a few of the questions, fellow DateAble members have had to think about, as we have listened to "Over The Top," an entertaining audio-taped series on, How To be Successful in Setting Goals," over the past six months. The tapes are written and narrated by Mr. Zig Zigler, a nationally known motivational speaker. After we listen to the tapes, we participate in a lively discussion ably lead by Robert Watson, Executive Director of DateAble, over what we have learned. Some of Mr. Zigler's basic points so far are:

Four Reasons 97% of Society Does Not Set Goals Are:

  1. FEAR, which stands for False Evidence Appearing Real.
  2. Poor Self-image
  3. Never Been Sold
  4. They Don't Know How to Set Goals.

The tapes teach you in a step by step way how to properly set goals for yourself. As Mr. Zigler says, "When a goal is properly set, it really about half reached." Mr. Zigler also emphasizes the importance of positive reinforcements such as positive attitudes and feedback from friends, mentors and co-workers, while illustrating his points by humorous stories.

As for myself, the biggest lesson I am learning is overcoming my fear of rejection. I am realizing that fear has stopped me from writing more and sending out manuscripts. I am a good writer, so eventually I know I will hit the right markets. The same holds true for achieving any type of goal. A person must desire and want to achieve his or her goals. Today, I am achieving my goals of sending out more manuscripts, doing what I love; making new friends both inside and outside of DateAble So, come and join us, the third Wednesday of every other month. Our next meeting will be in July.
