Artscape '96 will feature diverse arts activities for people of all
ages when it returns to Baltimore's Cultural Center this summer. Mayor
Kurt L. Schmoke will present the fifteenth annual festival on July 19,
20 and 21, free of charge. Festival hours are Friday, July 19 from
6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Saturday & Sunday, July 20 and 21 from noon
to 10:30 p.m.
Artscape '96 will feature outstanding musical performances on two
outdoor stages, indoor and outdoor visual arts exhibitions, a crafts
market, a fine arts marketplace, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's
Musical Petting Zoo and Family Concert, literary arts workshops and
celebrity readings, international dance performances, opera, chamber
music, a comedy stage, street theater and educational art programs for
children and their families. The festival will offer a wide variety of
services for people with disabilities, including:
- Audio description
- The opera, "The Old Maid and the Thief" by Gian Carlo Menotti,
which will be performed on Saturday and Sunday at 5:00 p.m. in
Langsdale Auditorium, Univer-sity of Baltimore, will be audio
described.
- Audio tapes
- Audio tapes of the festival brochure, literary arts brochure and
visual arts catalogue will be on loan at the Information Booth. Users
must provide their own cassette players.
- Bathrooms
- Accessible Spot-a-Pots will be in four locations of the festival
site. See brochure map for exact sites.
- Braille and large print material
- Braille and large print festival brochures, literary arts
brochures and visual arts catalogues will be available at the
Information Booth, indoor exhibitions and literary arts sites.
- Decker stage seating
- Reserved wheelchair seating will be at the top of the hill and
the bottom of the hill between the safety railing and the grass.
- Dining area
- An accessible outdoor dining area will be in the dining tents on
Mount Royal Avenue between Dolphin and Lanvale Streets.
- Mobility van & light rail
- An MTA mobility van will transport people with disabilities
between Decker Stage and the Quille parking lot at Preston & Howard
Streets. The Central Light Rail provides accessible public
transportation directly to ARTSCAPE. Stations closest to ARTSCAPE are
Cultural Center on Howard Street and University of Baltimore/Mount
Royal on Mount Royal Avenue. For more information on Light Rail

- Parking
- Free parking for vehicles displaying handicapped tags or stickers
is available on the Quille parking lot at Preston & Howard Streets.
- Sign language interpretation
- New this year, the 8:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday evening
highlight performances on Decker Stage will be sign interpreted. The
Literary Arts Awards Ceremony, Celebrity Readings, One Act Play,
Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Family Concert, CULTURAL COMPASS
International Dance Performances, McDonald's Family Performance Tent,
Opera, Provident Bank of Maryland Building With Blocks Workshops will
also be sign interpreted.
