The Maryland Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities is pleased to announce their Annual Conference theme will be "Technology and the Three R's, Recruiting, Retaining and Retaining." The Conference will be held on Friday, April 26, 1996 at Martin's West in Baltimore. The use of technology and employment will be explored during multiple workshop sessions. A Keynote address will be delivered by Charles Goldman, Esq., a well known disability rights attorney, who will address liability and employment issues and specializes in solving problems affecting persons with disabilities. He has worked with public and private organizations and agencies, as well as individuals and has written an award winning book titled "Disability Rights Guide, Practical Solutions to Problems Affecting People with Disabilities."
The 1995 Learning Independence Through Computers, Inc. (LINC) T-shirt, featuring an aqua blue sailing motif, has arrived and is ready for distribution. Designed by Emily Webster, age 12, a LINC member with low vision, the T-shirt was created on Kid Pix, a software program that offers the user boundless creativity.
Back by popular demand, reordered and also available for sale, is the 1994 T-shirt, designed by Danielle Harris, age 12, another LINC consumer. This design is in primary colors and features a bird and a sun against a bright blue sky. The artwork was also created with the Kid Pix software.
The T-shirts, youth sizes small and large, and adults large, sell for $12. Adult sizes, XL and XXL, are $14. To order yours, send a check to LINC at 28 E. State the number of shirts and sizes you would like and LINC will send them to you as quickly as possible.
The Alliance for Technology Access (ATA) recently published a book entitled Computer Resources for People with Disabilities, A Guide to Exploring Today's Assistive Technology. The book shows how to use computer technology to achieve goals and change the lives of people with disabilities. The book has received rave reviews from across the country and is available for purchase ($14.95) through LINC. (Please add $3 for shipping & handling.) A portion of the book's proceeds support LINC's ongoing projects.
Another valuable source of information on computer technology for persons with disabilities is Exceptional Parent Magazine, also available through the LINC Resource Center. This magazine provides information, practical guidance and emotional support for parents of children and young adults with disabilities and special health care needs. The Maryland Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities is now accepting nominations for the l996 Awards Program. There are nine categories in which individuals, agencies and businesses may be nominated for awards; Youth with a Disability Essay Contest; Outstanding Marylander with a Disability; Employer of the Year; Health Care Professional of the Year; Barrier-Free Design; Chester A. Troy, Sr. Public Service; Print or Electronic Media; Distinguished Service; and Evie Cutler Memorial Helping Hand.
Winners will be honored and presentations made at the Committee's Annual Conference and Awards Luncheon scheduled for Friday, April 26, 1996, at Martin's West in Baltimore.

All nominations must be postmarked by February 9, l996.

The event was hosted by local celebrity journalist, (soon-to-be television personality) Dan Rodericks, of the Baltimore Sun. "Newsline Night" was successful in raising funds and awareness of the opportunities offered to the blind community by new dial-in voice synthesized newspaper access. Now offering the New York Times, USA Today and the Washington Post, the program's organizers hope to add the Baltimore Sun soon.
