Thank you! I just read the Dec. issue of Tapping Technology and want to commend
all involved with this publication. It becomes more professional every time I
see it and I believe it should be a source of pride for all involved in the creation
of this rag. Jimi, I especially enjoyed reading your pieces.
Bud Rizer
Director, CATC
Mississippi State University
TT:
Thank you, Doctor Rizer! Coming from you, we consider that high praise indeed.
Your accolades were passed on to Jimi Kinstle (his head wouldn't fit through the
door for three days). Hope you're well and enjoying the Mississippi winter.
Dear Editor:
In my mailbox this week I received two periodicals. "Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Entrepreneurs Council" Winter- Volume 6 Number 4, published by the DHHEC
"Tapping Technology" December 1994, published my Maryland's Technology
Assistance Program. The DHHEC publication gives an insight to modern
communication when one looks at the adds on pages six and seven. TT numbers,
FAX numbers, RELAY numbers, WATTS lines, voice telephone numbers, are all
used. And my good friend Louis Schwarz heads the list by also including his
Internet e-mail address (hopefully more of the advertisers will add e-mail
addresses in the next issue). TAPPING Technology contained an article entitled
"Congressional E-mail?" on page fifteen by David Poehlman. He gives some e-
mail addresses: Clinton, Gore, Letterman, Limbaugh, BussinessWeek, Newsweek,
Rolling Stone, Time Magazine in hope more people will express themselves. He
asks "please senators and congress people, please state legislators, provide us
with e-mail access directly to you." And that's the point, is it not ? We have an
Internet address for Clinton and for Gore. Where is the e-mail address for
Senator Sarbanes and for Senator Milkulski ? Where are the e-mail addresses
for Maryland's Representatives in the House in particular Steny Hoyer, our ADA
hero? Where are the e-mail addresses for the General Assembly of Maryland in
Annapolis ? What is President Miller's e-mail address; and what is Speaker
Taylor's e-mail address ? What are the e-mail addresses for the Senate
Committees, the House Committees ? What are the relevant e-mail addresses
for the Department of Legislative Services and the Department of Fiscal
Services ? What are the e-mail addresses for individual Senators and Delegates
? And how about the executive branch of government. Will the new Governor
have an e-mail address, will the new Lt. Gov. have an e-mail address ? Does
Attorney General Curren have an e-mail address ? Does Comptroller Goldstein
have an e-mail address ? When the General Assembly elects the State
Treasurer, will the Treasurer have an e-mail address ? Hit harder to home.
When will all the staff members of the Technology Assistance Program (MD
TAP) in the Governor's Office for Individuals with Disabilities have e-mail
addresses ? When will the MD TAP publications be available on "Sailor"? When
will the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS/MSDE) have e-mail addresses
and its information and calendar be on "Sailor" ? When will the Developmental
Disabilities Administration (DDA/DHMH) have e-mail addresses be on "Sailor" ?
When will Maryland's two Centers for Independent Living (CILs) have e-mail
addresses and maintain independent living information and an IL calendar on
"Sailor" ? When will the Mental Hygiene Administration (MHA/DHMH) have e-
mail addresses and be on "Sailor" ? Is the Maryland Library for the Blind and
Disabled on the Internet ? 1995 IS HERE ! Let us all get to work on
communications ! Communications of this kind is very important to people with
disabilities.
Thomas John Martin
Chairman
Maryland Advisory Council for Individuals with Disabilities
TT:
Mr. Martin,
Some of the folks you asked about are "studying" the economics of
e-mail and the Internet while others still don't see it on the
horizon. As for us at MD TAP, we're working on the issue of making
sure all our publications are available on SAILOR - we agree they
should be there. All of our staff now have e-mail addresses and we
hope to have lots of practice using them.
