Jason uses a communication system with a dynamic, icon based display with up to 32 choices per 'page.' Preston scans through his and can only handle six choices, so his communication system has different levels for varying communication settings. Jennifer's communication system started out as picture based, but as her literacy emerges, she is typing more and more novel phrases with the help of word prediction. Brett needed a communication system with auditory preview, preferably in a different voice than what goes out through the public speaker. Some handle only one, two or three selections at a time. Some have overlays with twenty choices. Some use direct selection and some use a switch. Each is unique in the way he or she accesses their communication system, how it is set up and what they say, yet they all have one common bond...they are all speaking dynamically.
Speaking Dynamically is a software product that is revolutionizing the way a Macintosh computer, from Powerbooks to desktop units, can be used for communication or clinical evaluation.
This fall, MD TAP will offer a series of two part workshops across the state which will focus on the use of Speaking Dynamically with a Macintosh Powerbook. Part 1 will be practical examples of how Speaking Dynamically is being used in school, at home, in the community and in on the job training across the state of Maryland. We will look at copies of boards being used and discuss the thought process behind their design. Part 2 will look at practical tips and suggestions in a session on creating boards with Speaking Dynamically. Vocabulary selection and presentation as well as access options will be covered. Participants will leave with the knowledge of the power and versatility of Speaking Dynamically necessary to evaluate it's appropriateness for their own use. Should they determine Speaking Dynamically appropriate for their needs, they will have the basic skills necessary to leap into making boards.
Participant packages will include both printed information coinciding with the presentation and a demo version of Speaking Dynamically. Materials will be available in alternate formats if necessary. For additional information call 800/TECH-TAP or 800/99-WMTAP.
