for class discussion

movies to be viewed on at least four levels:

how do they convey what they have to say (plot, sequence)

how faithfully do they follow the novel
-
how are men, women, children, portrayed?

how do those portrayals differ from our own perceptions
-
novels to be read and interpreted on both their own terms and in
the historical context within which they were written and understood

questions for general discussion
:
1. have they ever heard the phrase 'grew like topsy' and, if
so what does it mean?
2. ever heard something like "his boss is a real Simon Legree,"
and, if so, what does that means
3. ever heard the phrase "jim crow"? What does it mean?
4. ever hear the phrase "Uncle Tom?" What does it mean?

this evening begin with the work of Professor
Willie Lee Rose and her efforts to understand the importance of the
novel in shaping American Culture as well as reflecting important elements
in our history that otherwise may be overlooked or misunderstood by those
who seek answers in the works of the intellectual elite
