CHAPTER XLVI. MUSTERED OUT. THE FIFTH PAID OFF AND DISCHARGED FROM THE ARMY.— CHANGES AMONG OFFICERS. On September 11 the paymaster visited the regiment and paid the men. All were then furloughed until October 10. In the meantime, they lost no time in fitting themselves with proper clothing. Those who had no homes in Baltimore were quartered at the armory until the time came for them to be mustered out of the service. On September 14 the equipment which the men had received from the Government was delivered to Captain J. C. Ayers, of the Ordnance Department. It included the soldiers' outfits of a tin cup, pan, knife, fork, spoon, knapsack, haversack, blanket, gun, belt and bayonet. It was found that the average shortage did not amount to more than ten dollars for each company, a remarkably good showing, it was said. Several soldiers died in the hospitals or at their homes after their return to Baltimore. Among the former was Lieutenant-Colonel William D. Robinson. Colonel Robinson died in the Elkin Sanitarium, at Atlanta, Ga., on September 28, from malaria, in consequence of his stay at Tampa. His illness was not considered serious and his death was entirely unexpected. Lieutenant-Colonel Robinson was born in Baltimore on October 9, 1864, and was a son of the late George Robinson, widely known as a clerk of the Superior Court. He was educated in the schools of Baltimore and studied law under Isaac McCurley, Esq. He was admitted to the bar in June, 1886, and in 1893 was elected a member of the House of Delegates.
