CHAPTER XXXV. . CAMP LOWNDE8 AT FREDERICK. MAJOR-GENERAL NELSON A. MILES VISITS THE MARYLAND NATIONAL GUARD. This was the year of the brigade encampment, and on Saturday, July 18, the Fifth Regiment, along with the rest of the Maryland National Guard, went into camp at "Camp Lowndes," near Frederick City, Brigadier-General Lawrason Riggs in command, and Colonel Frank Markoe in command of the Fifth Regiment. At this encampment the Fifth used the new manual of arms which had been adopted a month previously. The location of the camp was an 80-acre field, two and a-half miles east of Frederick, admirably situated on the national pike, and surrounded by rows of shade trees. The drill and parade grounds were admirably suited for , n mi -ğr Sergt. C. P. Heinemann, O. M.-Sergt. A. Thompson the purpose. The Monoc- .is v on acy afforded good bathing, and there was some fishing. Pure mountain water was conveyed to the camp through a two-inch pipe a mile long. The situation was magnificent and the camp beautiful. General Riggs and his staff went to the camp the day before the troops arrived so as to be there to receive them. The camp IN KHAKI UNIFORM, CO.
