At eight o'clock the special train bearing the soldiers to the Long Branch encampment moved out of the President Street Station. The trip was a night ride, and rain was falling, but the passage was not entirely without incidents. Wilmington was reached a half-hour before midnight, and the train was greeted with a round of cheers. It had been thought at first that a march through the streets of Philadelphia—deserted when the regiment arrived there—would be necessary, but through the courtesy of the railroad officials, the regiment moved around the city without change of cars, and at half-past two o'clock in the morning was on New Jersey soil.
