Henry
Julian Wadleigh
A
State Department official, Wadleigh admitted
to handing over hundreds of documents to Whittaker
Chambers for use by Moscow. Wadleigh
was not mentioned by Chambers as a source until
after Chambers produced the documents
in Nathan Levine's
dumbwaiter in November 1948. The defense raised
the possibility that Wadleigh was the source
of many of the documents offered at trial, a
possibility conceded by Wadleigh himself. Wadleigh
was not charged with espionage because the statute
of limitations had expired.
