Nathan
Gregory Silvermaster
Known
to the FBI as "Gregory," Silvermaster
was a government economist who allegedly became
head of the so-called Silvermaster group - government
employees who were charged with cooperating
with Russian intelligence agents during World
War II. Elizabeth Bentley
said Silvermaster was a member of a small espionage
ring that gave her government documents.
Some
historians say declassified "Venona"
documents suggest that Silvermaster passed on
government data to the Russians during the war.
Throughout his life, however, Silvermaster firmly
denied the charges, and family members are continuing
their efforts to clear his name.
