Thomas
Murphy
Murphy, an Assistant U.S. Attorney, was thrust
into the national spotlight when he became prosecutor
in both Hiss trials. After the second trial
conviction, Murphy, seen here at left, was appointed
first as Police Commissioner of New York City
and later to the federal bench. Hiss's coram
nobis petition filed in 1978 documented numerous
examples of prosecutorial misconduct by Murphy
and his staff.
