Nye
was a Republican Senator from North Dakota and
the chairman of a Senate committee charged with
investigating the activities of the munitions
industry during World War I. In 1934 and 1935,
Alger Hiss was a counsel to this committee.
It was in this capacity that he said he met
and helped a freelance writer named George
Crosley, who would later turn out to
be Whittaker Chambers.
