The Cast

Evelyn Ehrlich

An expert in the detection of typographic and other forgeries associated with the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, Ehrlich was asked to analyze the typewriter evidence for Alger Hiss's motion for a new trial. Ehrlich filed an affidavit with photographs showing clear differences in typefaces between the Woodstock machine #230,099 and the machine which typed the "Hiss Standards," the personal documents acknowledged to have been typed on the Hiss's typewriter in the 1930s. She also said that using the standards applied by the FBI document examiner, Ramos Feehan, at trial, one could not tell the difference between the typing produced by the machine specially built by the Hiss defense for the motion for a new trial and the Hiss Standards -- thus suggesting that forgery by typewriter was possible.
