The Commission met in the Senate
Chamber.
There were present The Governor,
The
Comptroller, The Treasurer,
Hon Spencer
C. Jones, Gen F.C. Latrobe,
Hon S.D.
Schmucker, Hon P.J. Campbell
and
T.J.C. Williams.
Mr. Josias Pennington, the
Architect was
also present.
The Governor announced that
in
accordance with the action
of the
Commission looking to the
resto-
ration of the Old Senate
Chamber
to its original condition
he had ap-
pointed an Advisory Committee
composed of representatives
of va-
rious patriotic societies
as follows.-
D. Appleton Wilson, Clayton
C. Hall,
J.S. Gittings, DeCoursey
W. Thom, Josias
Pennington, Dr J.D. Iglehart,
John
Wirt Randall and George
H. Shafer.
Messrs Baldwin and Pennington,
Architects
This Committee being present
at
the meeting of the Commission
they were invited to make
their report
which Mr. Thom accordingly
read.
It showed that the work
of restoration
was completed.
Upon motion of Mr. T.J.C.
Williams
the Report was accepted
with the
thanks of the Commission.
Judge Schmucker said that
at the
meeting of the Commission
held on
October 19 a quorum was
not present
although the minutes show
that there
was. He therefore
moved that the action
taken by the Commission
at that
meeting be approved and
affirmed [?]
and it was so ordered.
It was ordered, upon the
motion of
Gen. Vandiver that the portraits
of
Governors Smith and Warfield,
as the
two Executives under whose
admin-
istration the State House
Annex was
built- and that of the Hon
Spencer C.
Jones, the author of the
bid for its con-
struction and the President
of the Senate
at the first session held
in the
new chamber, were ordered
to be
hung in the Senate Chamber.
Gen. Latrobe after expressing
his
satisfaction with the construction
of
the Annex to the State House
and
of the work of restoration
of the
Old Senate Chamber and the
repairs to the Old State
House,
moved that the thanks of
the
Commission be extended to
the
Architects, Baldwin and
Pennington
and to the Governor for
his excellent
service in suggesting and
furthering
the work of restoration.
It was so ordered.
Mr. Josias Pennington made
his
report of work done and
ordered
to this date and of the
expenditures.
The report was accepted.
It shows that work on the
Old Building
cost $25,856. That the original
appropriations for the State
House
amounted to $857,317.70
and that
the cost of the Annex completed
was
$25,856 less than appropriations.
The architect was ordered
to
have step covers for the
main
stairway leading to the
portico at
a cost of $160. The
Governor agreeing
to pay it ot of another
fund.
Mr. Williams moved the ap-
pointment of a committee
of
three to prepare a report
to the
Legislature giving details
of
the work of the Commission.
The motion was adopted and
the
chair appointed Messrs Williams,
Latrobe and Jones.
Upon motion of Mr. Campbell
the
Architect was directed to
order
chairs at a cost of $400
for the
two retiring rooms for senators
and
delegates.
Upon motion of Mr. Jones,
the report
of the architects was accepted
and
approved.
Upon motion adjourned.
