Born John Nelson Watkins, September 24, 1790, in Annapolis, Maryland. Son of Joseph and Ann (Gray) Watkins. Attended St. John's College. Unmarried. Died January 1, 1871, in Baltimore, Maryland. Buried St. Ann's Cemetery, Annapolis, Maryland.

Member, Maryland House of Delegates representing the City of Annapolis, 1827-28. Adjutant general, 1835-56. Member of the board of visitors and governors, St. John's College, Annapolis.
