Charles Henry Obery
Jr. (1882-1956)
MSA SC 3520-16854
Biography:
Charles Henry Obery Jr. was born in Annapolis, Maryland to Charles Obery Sr. (1858-1950) and Bertha L. Obery. His father served as Chief of Police for the city of Annapolis.[1]
By 1900, Charles Obery Jr. was already apprenticed as a bricklayer.[2] In July 1906, Obery worked alongside fellow Annapolis bricklayer, Joseph Holland, on the chimney for the Old Senate Chamber. The pair signed and dated the back of Obery's 1904 Union Card, which was discovered in the chimney on October 4, 2013.[3] Obery's brother, John, followed in his footsteps and by 1910 both were bricklayers living in Brickyard Heights in Annapolis.[4]
On November 30, 1911, Charles married his first wife, Sadie. They lived together until 1912, and officially divorced in 1919.[5] Within the next year, Charles married Estella Mary League of Annapolis and the couple moved to Baltimore by 1930. They had no children.[6] Estella died in 1953, predeceasing Obery.
Obery Jr. died on February 6, 1956. He is buried at St. Anne's Cedar Bluff Cemetary in Annapolis with his wife.[7]
