MSA SC 3520-16771

Biography:

Birth: c.1783 to Simon Retallick Sr. and Elizabeth Retallick, Annapolis, MD. Wife: Sarah Phelps (1798, Annapolis, MD). [1]

Simon Retallick (or Retallack) Jr. began blacksmith work after attending St. John’s College in Annapolis from 1795 until he left without graduating on May 11, 1797. [2] The first record of paid work by Retallick is recorded in William Faris’ October 1798 accounts to “Young Simon” for repairing two tablespoon punches.

When his father died in 1799, his mother Elizabeth Retallick entered a partnership with Richard Goodwin, Simon Retallick Sr.’s former business partner, to oversee the family business. [3] Simon Retallick Jr. took over the shop as blacksmith c.1801, moving his shop from his father’s location on the corner of Green and Church Street to “Corn Hill Street just below the State House” in Annapolis. [4] Retallick Jr. was paid in 1801 and 1802 for work done to the State House, including making a new key for the front door and repairing locks. [5]

By 1804, Retallick Jr. had moved to Baltimore. After some time operating as a blacksmith in the city, Retallick enlisted in the military in 1819. At the time of his death in 1824, he was stationed at Fort McHenry in Baltimore as as an artificer to the military under the command of F. S. Belton. [6]
