John Crisall (c.1706-1786)
MSA SC 3520-16766
Annapolis Merchant
Biography:
1706-1786.
Wife: possibly Anne Lenton (married 17 April, 1726 at Oxford-Cluny,
Huntingdonshire). [1]
Children: Thomas, William, Sarah, and Grace. [2]
John Crisall (or Criswell) immigrated
to Annapolis
from Cambridgeshire,
England,
possibly around 1738; though the earliest known documentation of Crisall in America is not until 1766 when the Maryland Gazette notes a letter belonging to him at the Annapolis post office. [3]
Between 1776 and 1786, Crisall was paid several times for providing consumable items and candles for the Maryland State House
and
General Assembly. [4]
Crisall
served as Annapolis Commissary and provided clothing to soldiers,
supplies for
the local hospital, and distributed rations to war wives. [5]
