HEADLINE: Former Delegate Henry Fowler of Md. Dies

Henry John Fowler Sr., 79, a former Maryland legislator who had been treasurer of Pargas Corp. in Waldorf from 1948 until he retired in 1973, died of Alzheimer's disease July 23 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Leonardtown.

Mr. Fowler, a Democrat from St. Mary's County, served in the House of Delegates from 1950 to 1954 and again from 1958 to 1963. He served a one-year interim appointment in the state Senate from 1963 to 1964, then returned to the House of Delegates where he served until he was defeated for reelection in 1970.

He had served as the chairman of the protocol and entertainment committee of the House of Delegates, and in 1962 wrote the legislation to make jousting the official Maryland state sport.

A lifelong resident of Mechanicsville, Mr. Fowler was a graduate of Charlotte Hall Military Academy. He had worked in a family store there, then served in the Army during World War II.

He was a former president of the Mechanicsville Fire Department and president of the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen's Association, district governor of the Lions Clubs of Southern Maryland and Washington, president of the Southern Maryland Society, a charter member of the St. Mary's County Fair board and a member of the Maryland 350th Anniversary Commission and the Maryland Bicentennial Commission.

Mr. Fowler was a horseman, president of the Maryland Jousting Tournament Association and a former master of the fox hounds of De La Brooke Fox Hounds W.

He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, a fourth degree knight of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the American Legion and the St. Mary's County Historical Society.

His wife, Susan Carne Ficklin, died in 1966. Survivors include three children, Henry J. Fowler Jr., Eleanor F. Slater and Susannah C. Fowler, all of Mechanicsville; a sister, Virginia Earnshaw of LaPlata; and three grandchildren.
