Biography:

Born June 26, 1812, in Annapolis, Maryland.  Son of William and Mary Harwood Stockett Alexander.  Attended St. John's College, Annapolis, Maryland.  Married Margaret Hammer, June 4, 1836, in Baltimore, Maryland; five sons and a daughter.  Died March 2, 1867.

Chief Engineer of Maryland, 1833-1837. Professor, University of Pennyslvania; University of Maryland.

Fellow, American Philosophical Society. Member, Geographical and Statistical Society; Maryland Historical Society; Pennsylvania Historical Society; Belle Lettres Society at the College of St. James in Hagerstown, Maryland.
