George Moore Brady (1882-1953)

Biography:

Born February 2, 1882, in Baltimore, Maryland. Son of Katherine Taylor Hunter and James H. Brady. Attended local public schools. Graduated Loyola College, A.B., 1900; Georgetown University, A.M., 1902; Ph.D., 1903; LL.B., 1903; Catholic University of America, LL.M. 1905; J.D., 1907. Admitted to the Bar of Maryland, 1903. Married Ellen L. Atkinson (1895-1943), 1920; five children: George M. Brady, Jr.; James H.T. Brady; John Atkinson Brady; Eleanor Brady; Emily Niernsee Brady. Married Margaret H. Commiskey, 1949. Died April 14, 1953, Baltimore, Maryland.

Began law career working with several law firms in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Formed partnership with George M. Maloy, 1904, later Brady, Maloy and Yost, a long-lasting partnership. Served on Wartime Shipping Board during World War I. Unsuccessful candidate, Supreme Bench of Baltimore, 1934 and 1938; Democrat. Considered a leading legal expert on corporations; author of Maryland Corporation Law (1916), for many years a standard legal text. Served as defendant's attorney in Diggs v. Morgan College, among other notable cases. Counsel, board member, Baltimore Children's Hospital. Member, St. Ignatius Catholic Church; St. Vincent de Paul Society; University Club. Described early in his career as "young and ambitious, industrious and strong in his reasoning powers...He is sometimes over-frank in declaring his principles but his is sincere in maintaining them."
