Alan Bowie (1878-1964)
MSA SC 3520-14772

Biography:

Born Alan Bowie in Prince George's County, Maryland in 1878. Son of Robert (1852-1905) and Mary Bowie (d. 1934). Attended local public schools. Read law with John K. Roberts. Admitted to the Bar, 1902. Married Ann Hall Bowie (d. 1965), 1937; no children. Died on November 14, 1964.

State's Attorney, Prince George's County, 1923-1926 and 1930-1938; Democrat. Trial Magistrate, Prince George's County, 1939-1951. Founding member, Prince George's County Bar Association, 1902; secretary and treasurer, 1902-1964.

Bowie was elected State's Attorney in a series of closely contested races. After winning without great difficulty in 1923, Bowie lost reelection in 1926 to J. Frank Parran by five votes, a race in which Bowie's opposition to gambling and drinking cost him support. Bowie won close races in both the Democratic Party primary and general election in 1930, beating Clarence M. Roberts and Albert R. Hassall, respectively. He was reelected in 1934 after a tough primary campaign against Robert W. McCullough, and then defeated Parran in the general.
