John Gresham (?-1723)

Biography:

Probably born in Maryland. Son of John Gresham (d. 1713). One known brother, Michael (d. 1712). Married Sarah, by c. 1699; seven children, six who survived: John (1699-1700); Priscilla (b. 1702); John (c. 1703-1752); Richard (1704-1777); Thomas (c. 1705-1731/2); Sarah (b. 1709); Elizabeth, (b. 1710). Died, probably in Annapolis, December 24, 1723.

Planter and merchant in Anne Arundel County and Annapolis. Served as Sheriff of  Anne Arundel County three times: from c. 1701 to 1705, from 1708 to 1711, and from May, 1723 to his death. Appointed Examiner General, September 22, 1722, served until his death. Mayor of Annapolis, 1717-1718. Alderman, Annapolis, 1719, 1721, 1722; earlier terms possible. Vestryman, St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Annapolis, from as early as 1707 to 1713, and again 1717-1721. At the time of his death, owned approximately 4700 acres throughout Maryland. His estate was valued at £2472.
