Biography:

Born November 30, 1956, in Washington, D.C.  Third son of Edward E. Cornwell, Jr., and Shirley Cornwell.  B.A., Brown University, 1978; M.D., Howard University, 1982.  Married, Maggie Burdette Covington, 1989; one son, Michael.  
 
Noted for significant contributions to critical care, and violence prevention efforts with at-risk youth.  Served internship, residency, Los Angeles County/University of Southern California Medical Center, 1982-1987.  Fellowship, Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (Shock Trauma), Baltimore, Maryland, 1987-1989.  Assistant Professor of Surgery, Howard University Medical School, 1989-1993; University of Southern California, 1993-1997. Associate Professor of Surgery University of Southern California, 1998; Johns Hopkins University, 1999.  Chief of Trauma, Johns Hopkins University Hospital, 1998 to present.  President, Hopkins Injury Prevention and Community Learning Center, 2000. Board of Directors, New Song Community Learning Center, 2001 to present; Police Athletic League, Baltimore, Maryland, 1998.  Member, National Medical Association; Alpha Omega Alpha.  Howard University Hospital Legacy of Leadership Honoree, 2001.  Recipient, Speaker's Medallion, 2006.
