James Craig McLanahan (1881-1946)

Biography:

Born Baltimore, Maryland, April 28, 1881.  Son of Rev. Samuel McLanahan (d. 1912), Presbyterian minister of some importance in the region, and Maude Imbrie (d. 1884).  Attended several local Baltimore schools, as well as Lawrenceville Academy, in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where his father was a teacher.  Received B.A. Princeton University, 1903.  Attended University of Maryland Law School, received LL.B. 1903.  Married Linda Walke, 1934; two children, J. Craig McLanahan, Jr., born in 1935, and Linda McLanahan, born 1939.  Died March 19, 1946 in Baltimore.

Private practice largely focused on corporation law.  Partner of firm of France, McLanahan & Rouzer.  Served as Assistant U.S. District Attorney, 1910-1915.  Entered Maryland National Guard, attained rank of captain at onset of World War I, 1917.  Instructor of field artillery, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, 1917-1919.  Eventually attained rank of Brigadier General, Maryland National Guard, 1931.  Resigned position upon election to Supreme Bench of Baltimore City, 1938. Died while serving on the bench.
