Biography:

Born John Hammond McElfresh, May 27, 1796, near New Market, Frederick County, Maryland. Son of Henry and Ariana (Hammond) McElfresh. Attended Frederick College; University of Maryland Medical School, 1817. Studied Medicine under Dr. L. T. Hammond, of Anne Arundel County, 1813. Studied Law under John Nelson of Frederick. Admitted to the bar, 1825. Married Teresa Mantz (daughter of Francis and Anna Mary (Burkhardt) Mantz), March 27, 1820. Several children, among them: Anna Mary (m. Jacob M. Kunkel in 1848), Ariana (m. Charles E. Trail), and Henry. Died August 4, 1841.
 

Member, House of Delegates for Frederick County, 1830. Member, State Reform Convention, November 1836.
