Charles Marshall (1830-1902)

Biography:

Born October 3, 1830 in Warrenton, Fauquier County, Virginia. Son of Alexander J. Marshall and Maria Rose (Taylor) Marshall. Married (1) Emily Andrews and she died 1858, bearing one child: Emily Rosalie Marshall. (2) Rebecca Snowden, bearing five sons. H. Snowden, James Markham, Robert E. Lee, Dr. Harry T., and Charles A. Graduated from the University of Virginia with a Master of Arts 1850. Professor of Mathematics at Indiana University 1850-1852. Studied law in the firm of William Schley. Admitted to the bar 1852. Joined the Confederate Forces at the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War, as military secretary on the personal staff of General Robert E. Lee. Accompanied General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, for the surrender of Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant. Returned to Baltimore at the end of the U.S. Civil War and formed a legal practice with William A. Fisher, Associate Judge of the Supreme Bench of Baltimore City (1882-1886) 1867-1882. Formed the law firms of Marshall & Hall; Marshall, Marbury & Bowdoin and Charles Marshall & Sons. On the 1st Committee on Nominations for the Bar Association of Baltimore City 1879. 6th President of the Bar Association of Baltimore City 1884. Died April 19, 1902, at his home No 213 West Lanvale Street, Baltimore, Maryland.
