Biography:

Born Clayton Daniel Mote, Jr., in San Francisco, California, on February 5, 1937. Attended University of California at Berkeley; B.S., mechanical engineering, 1959; M.S., mechanical engineering, 1960; Ph.D., engineering mechanics, 1963. Wife Patricia L. Mote; two children, four grandchildren.

Research Fellow, University of Birmingham, England, 1963-64. Assistant Professor, Carnegie Mellon University, 1964-67. Professor of mechanical engineering, 1967-98; department chair, 1987-91; Vice-Chancellor of University Relations, 1991-98, University of California at Berkeley. President, University of California at Berkeley Foundation, 1991-1998. President, University of Maryland, College Park, 1998-present.

Fellow, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, 1991. Board of Directors, University System of Maryland Foundation, 1998-. Chair, Board of Directors, University Research Corporation International. Board of Visitors, University of Maryland, College Park, 1998-present.
