Born circa 1824, in Annapolis, Maryland. Son of Louis C. and Rebecca (Hendry) Gassaway. Married Emily Welsh Whittington (c. 1838-9/9/1910),  August 25, 1857. One child, Rena (d. 12/20/1922). Died June 15, 1885, in Baltimore, Maryland. Buried, St. Anne's Cemetery, Annapolis, Maryland.

Deputy Clerk, Court of Appeals. Postmaster, Annapolis, 1853-61. Secretary, Maryland State Senate, 1867-1878. Mayor of Annapolis, 1869-70. Gassaway later moved to Baltimore City, where he worked in the Record office until his death.
