Josias Pennington (1854-1929)

Biography:
Born in Baltimore, January 24, 1854. Son of Charles Josias and Elizabeth Tayloe Winder Pennington. Attended St. John's College, Annapolis, 1868-1869. Married Margaret Riggs Pleasants (b. 1861) in Baltimore, November 21, 1883. One son, Hall Pleasants Pennington (1888-1942). Died in Baltimore, March 3, 1929. Buried, Greenmount Cemetery, Baltimore.
Served as an apprentice under Ephraim Baldwin at Baldwin & Price. They became partners and established Baldwin & Pennington. They practiced together until Baldwin's death in 1916. Pennington's son, Pleasants, later joined the practice, and it was renamed Pennington & Pennington. Pleasants later moved to New York. Josias also served as president of the Baltimore Chapter of the A.I.A.
Pennington was very active socially. Memberships included: Municpal Art Society; Maryland Society of Colonial Wars; Sons of the Revolution; the Society of the War of 1812; the Maryland Club; the Baltimore Country Club; and the Elkridge Kennels.
State House work: Renovations to the State House, and the new annex of 1903.
Other notable works include a number of buildings in Baltimore, among
them the Maryland Trust Company Building; Professional Building; 1910 addition
to the Baltimore County Courthouse; Farmers & Merchants National Bank;
Fidelity Building, 210 North Charles Street (1894); Hutzler Brothers Complex,
210-234 North Howard Street (1888); Maryland Club, Charles and Eager Streets
(1891); Munsey Building; Mount Royal Station (1896), and other buildings
for the B&O Railroad, including the warehouse at Camden Yards (1898-1905)
and the famous roundhouse (1884); General Hospital; several school buildings;
police building on Fallsway.
