William Shepard Bryan, Sr. (1827-1906)

Biography:

Born November 20, 1827 in Newberne (or New Bern), North Carolina.  Son of John Heritage Bryan (member of congress from North Carolina) and Mary (Shepard) Bryan.  Married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Edmondson Hayward (c. 1835-1898) of Talbot County, Maryland, October 1, 1857.  Children:  William Shepard Bryan, Jr. (1859-1914), Elizabeth Hayward (b. 1862), George Pettigrew (c. 1865-1914), Carryl Harper (male, c. 1868-1927).  Studied law.  Admitted to the Maryland bar.   Resided in Mount Royal Apartments (Mount Royal Avenue and Calvert Street), Baltimore.  Died of liver cancer on December 9, 1906.  Buried in Greenmount Cemetery, Baltimore.

Practiced law in Baltimore.  Southern sympathizer.  Presidential elector, 1876.  Judge, Maryland Court of Appeals, 1883-98.
