Petition in “Remonstrance against the Pardon of Ann Matthews:”

"The undersigned Property holders and others of the City of Baltimore respectfully beg leave to state that they have learned that a certain Ann Matthews has been
convicted before Baltimore City court at the present term on the charge of enticing persuading a slave named Margaret the property of Washington Rider of this City
to escape from the service of her said owner.  We also learn that she also at this time stands indicted before said Court on other charges—and that an attempt is
making for purpose of applying to your Excellency to interpose the authority of the state to quash the proceedings or to grant a Pardon.

This Ann Matthews stands noted in her neighborhood as one of the very worst characters and is a terror to her neighbors—her conviction has we feel assured given
satisfaction to those who know her best, and we respectfully ask your Excellency not to interfere, but to permit the laws to have its just and proper course in the the
case of Ann Matthews.  Baltimore October 14, 1848.

This is signed by 28 citizens, among them Washington Rider, the slave owner.
