John Bowers Eccleston (1794-1860)

Biography:

Born in 1794 in Kent County, Maryland.  Son of Samuel Eccleston (d. 1802) and Ann (Bowers) Eccleston.  Attended Washington College; studied law.  Admitted to the Kent County bar, c. 1817.  Married first wife Ann M. P. Clarkson, July 26, 1827; married second wife Augusta Chambers Houston, November 2, 1829; children Augusta Chambers (d. 1832), a second Augusta Chambers (m. Samuel M. Shoemaker), Samuel, James Houston, Miriam, James Kent Harper, Ann Isabel (d. young).  Died at home in Chestertown, November 12, 1860.

Fought at "Caulk's Field," Kent County, in the War of 1812.  Engaged in the private practice of law.  Elected to the House of Delegates from Kent County, 1817 and 1820.  Member, board of visitors and governors of Washington College, 1832-.  Vestryman, Chester Parish Church.  Judge, Second Judicial District of Maryland (Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne's and Talbot counties), 1832-51.  Judge, Maryland Court of Appeals, 1851-60.
