Biography:

Born in Cumberland, Maryland, May 7, 1837.  Son of Joseph (d. 1886) and Henrietta J. (Causten) Shriver.  Attended public schools of Cumberland; Allegany County Academy.  Unmarried.  Died March 18, 1912 in Cumberland.

Employed by the Cumberland Bank of Allegany county (later First National Bank of Cumberland) when his father was president of the bank; succeeded to the presidency of the bank at his father's death in 1886.   First treasurer of Allegany County, 1872-78.  Main speaker at the Centennial Anniversary of the founding of Allegany County, 1889 (click here to read his speech).  Member, Board of School Commissioners for Allegany County, 1883-1891; president for four years.  Member and president, Cumberland City Council, 1896-1902.  Headed an effort to gain greater funding for Allegany County public schools by bringing a lawsuit against the comptroller of the treasury, Joshua W. Hering in 1903.  President and member of the executive committee, Maryland State Bankers' Association.  Member, Board of Trustees, Allegany County Academy; Western Maryland Hospital.  Director, Cumberland Steel Company; Cumberland Dry Goods and Notions Company; Eddy Press Corporation.  Secretary, treasurer and director, Cumberland Gaslight Company.  Trustee, Riverside Park.  President, Twentieth Century Literary Club.  Member, Emmanual Episcopal Church.  Commodore, Shawnee Canoe Club.  Supported the Central YMCA.
