Thomas Elmo Jones (1906-1971)

Biography:

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, December 17, 1906.  Son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Jones.  Attended public schools; Woodward Preparatory School; George Washington University, Washington, D.C.; Southeastern University, LL.B.  Admitted to the Maryland bar.  Married Mary Virginia Chaney, 1938; three children. Died December 30, 1971, in Washington, D.C.

Maryland House of Delegates, Prince George's County, 1939-41.  Chair, Special Investigating Committee under Section 24 of Article 3 of the Maryland constitution.  Partner, T. J. Jones & Sons, General Contractors.  Maryland secretary of state, 1941-46.*  Chairman of the board, Rock Bottom Country Club.  Chairman of the board, Better Housing Program for Prince George's County.  Member, Chamber of Commerce, Prince George's County.  Member, Citizens' Association of Prince George's County.

*Thomas Elmo Jones was absent from office, April 20, 1944-February 7, 1946.  During that time, William J. McWilliams was appointed assistant to the secretary of state and held the title of secretary of state for two days, February 7 and 8, 1946.
