Gilbert Giordano, fund manager and past state delegate, dies at
age 72
Gilbert Rowland Giordano, 72, a highly successful mutual fund manager,
banker, attorney and former state delegate, died suddenly Jan. 17 at
Anne Arundel Medical Center.
The 25-year resident of Lothian was a portfolio manager of the Titan
Financial Services Fund, which in November placed 14th among the
5,801 domestic equity funds because of its percentage of return. At the
time it had $31 billion in assets.
Mr. Giordano launched the fund just months before a car accident in
1996 outside Vail, Colo., left him paralyzed. He used technology to his
advantage to manage the fund. Last year he also founded the Titan
Growth Fund, doing the bulk of the work from his home.
In banking for 34 years, he started United Banking and Trust and sold it
to First Virginia in 1988. He was a member of the board of directors of
First Virginia Bank, the parent company of the Annapolis-based
Farmers Bank of Maryland, whose merger he arranged in 1994.
He also had built a prominent law firm in Prince George's County.
Still a practicing attorney, he also was a land developer and office
builder in Prince George's County and a Burger King franchisee.
A former resident of Oxon Hill, he served in the Navy and was a
delegate in the Maryland State Legislature at one time.
Born April 1, 1928, in New Haven, Conn., Mr. Giordano graduated Phi
Beta Kappa from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.,
with a history degree. He received his law degree from Georgetown
University, also in Washington.
Mr. Giordano was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, the
Maryland Bar Association, the Mount of the Holy Cross Lutheran
Church in Vail and a board member of the Vail Valley Association. He
collected 21 cars including a 1938 Packard and a 1966 Mustang. He
also enjoyed history, hunting, skiing and business.
Surviving are his wife, Donna M. Giordano, whom he married on July
21, 1973; one son, Jason Giordano of Lothian; four daughters, Pamela
Giordano and Camille Ackerman of Madison, Conn., Tamara
Giordano-Krugman of Boca Raton, Fla., and Dawn Force of
Torrington, Wy.; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Woodside, a
former Clagett estate he bought and restored for his home, where funeral
services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Burial will be private. Arrangements
are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.
