George Gambrill
Anne Arundel County Court Clerk, 1866
MSA SC 3520-13138

Biography:

George Gambrill was born around 1827.1  On December 24, 1854, Gambrill married Georgietta W. Brown, daughter of Joshua and Hariet Maria Allen Brown.2  The Gambrills had two children:  Mary, who died shortly after childbirth, and Mrs. John B. Barlow.3  George Gambrill began work as the Deputy Clerk for the Court of Appeals in 1842 and served in that position for 23 years.  In 1863, Gambrill was received unanimous nomination as his party's candidate for Clerk of the Court for Anne Arundel County.  He lost the election, however, to Nicholas H. Green.  After Green's death in 1865, a special election was held to fill the position.  The Annapolis Gazette endorsed Gambrill for the seat, describing him as "a consistent Union man."4  Gambrill was again defeated, this time by state senator Sprigg Harwood.  Gambrill contested the election, on the basis that Harwood was not an eligible candidate for the position.  The case was heard by the House of Delegates, who decided that Harwood was ineligible.  The House rewarded the seat to Gambrill, who had received the second most amount of votes.5  Gambrill did not seek re-election for in 1867, when the normal election pattern resumed.  It is assumed that Gambrill moved to Frederick, for he died there on November 30, 1893.6
