Thomas Briscoe
Anne Arundel County Court Clerk, 1692-1694
MSA SC 3520-13132

Biography:

There is little information available about Thomas Briscoe.  The resources available do not reveal much about Briscoe's family or his land holdings.  Only Owings, in his His Lordship's Patronage, mentions any family ties of Briscoe.  Owings states that Briscoe was a dependant of Provincial Secretary Lawrence.1  No other book or record notes the family of Thomas Briscoe and no resource mentions whether or not  Briscoe was married or had children.  The exact county of Briscoe's residence is uncertain.  Owings writes that he is from Calvert County, but Briscoe did hold property in Anne Arundel County, as evidenced by an inventory of his holdings in Anne Arundel County officials.2

Briscoe served as Anne Arundel County Court Clerk from October 1692 until May 1694.  He was then appointed to the same position for Calvert County in either May 1694 or  May 1695 and served until his death in August 1695.3  Briscoe was also the Naval Officer of the Patuxent, serving from November 10, 1694 until his death.4  The inventory of Briscoe's property in Anne Arundel County lists several items including cloth, clothes, one horse, five hogs, books, two axes, and two wigs.  Another inventory lists fees due to Briscoe as Clerk of the Court for Calvert County.5  No will was found, so the distribution of this property is unknown.
