Ormond Hammond (1825-1897)

Biography:

Born November 9, 1825 in Frederick County, Maryland.  Son of Eden Hammond (d. 1834) and Charlotte Worthington Hammond.  Attended Seaford Academy, Sussex County, Delaware; studied English in Baltimore; studied classics at Georgetown College, Washington, D.C.; studied liberal arts in Philadelphia.  Married Mary M. Cox (died c. 1890), 1847.  Children:  Ormond, Jr. (d. 1907), Howard, Herbert, Francis E., Percy, Mary and two other daughters.  Resided at "Solitude" in St. Michael's, Talbot County, Maryland.  Died May 2, 1897 in Talbot County, Maryland.

Clerk, dry goods house, 1845-48.  Farmer, St. Michael's, Talbot County after 1847.  Member and secretary, St. Michael's Agricultural Society.  Delegate, Talbot County, 1867 Constitutional Convention of Maryland.  Member, Maryland State Senate (D), Talbot County, 1868.  Member, Maryland House of Delegates (D), Talbot County, 1870.  Chair, Committee on Education.  President, Workingmen's Building & Loan Association of St. Michael's.  Insurance agent.  Assistant treasurer of the United States, Baltimore, 1894-97.  Member, Masons.
