John Grason Turnbull (1909-1984)

Biography:
Born January 23, 1909,Towson, Maryland. Son of Henry R. and Elizabeth R. (Grason) Turnbull. Attended McDonogh School, 1925; Johns Hopkins University; University of Maryland Law School, 1932. Admitted to the Maryland Bar, November 15, 1932. Married (1) Esther E. DeArman (d. 1974), 1942; (2) Mary Katherine Hance, 1977. One son, John Grason Turnbull II. Died March 31, 1984. Buried, Emmanuel Episcopal Church Cemetery, Glencoe, Maryland.
Upon admission to the Maryland Bar in 1932, John Grason Turnbull practiced law in Towson, Maryland, where he served as deputy state's attorney from 1939 until 1943. In 1943, Turnbull was elected from Baltimore County to a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates. With World War II taking place, he resigned his seat and enlisted as a private in the United States Army. Turnbull left the Army in 1946 with the rank of captain in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. After his discharge, Turnbull returned Towson, and was elected state's attorney from 1947-1948. In 1949, Governor William Preston Lane, Jr., appointed Turnbull to fill a vacancy in the Maryland State Senate. He was later elected on his own, and served unil 1958, when he declined to run for a third term. While in the Senate, Turnbull served as the majority leader from 1955-1957, and chairman of the Finance Committee. In 1960, Governor J. Millard Tawes appointed Turnbull to the bench of the Baltimore County Circuit Court, where he served until his retirement in 1976.
