Biography:

Born Michael Lee McCampbell, July 3, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan. Attended East High School, Cleveland, Ohio; University of Baltimore, B.A. (Psychology), 1978; University of Baltimore School of Law, J.D., 1982. Admitted to Maryland Bar, 1982. Married Atifeh. One daughter, Veida McCampbell. Died May 16, 2002, Phoenix, Maryland.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, Michael L. McCampbell began his career with the Howard County Police Department in 1972. He left the department in 1977, with the rank of corporal. While with the police department, he began studies in pyschology at the University of Baltimore, graduating in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1982, he received a law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law, and was admitted to the Maryland Bar in December 1982. He was an Assistant State's Attorney for Baltimore County from 1983-1984, before moving to the Baltimore County Office of the Public Defender, 1984-1990. Governor William Donald Schaefer appointed McCampbell to the bench of the Baltimore County District Court on February 9, 1990, making him the first African-American judge in the county. In 1999, he was appointed administrative judge of the Baltimore County District Court. McCampbell was a member of the Baltimore County Bar Association, and the Administrative Judges Committee of the District Court of Maryland.
