Reactivation of the famous 29th Infantry Division will mean construction of a new armory in Maryland, creation of hundreds of new jobs and a general boost to the state's economy, Brig. Gen. James Fretterd said yesterday.
The division, made up of Maryland and Virginia soldiers when it spearheaded the American invasion of Omaha Beach on D-Day 40 years ago, will again draw its members from Maryland and Virginia. Its reactivation was announced Wednesday.
Fretterd, assistant adjustant general of the Army National Guard, said the reactivation mandates construction of a $6 million, 600-man armory in Edgewood and $500,000 for renovation of the existing armory in Chestertown, and would create 120 full-time and 230 part-time jobs with a payroll of about $5 million.
