Patrick T. Welsh
[Age 56] The Dundalk resident served in the House of Delegates and state Senate.

Patrick T. Welsh, a former state senator from Dundalk and a longtime real estate agent, died of pancreatic cancer Tuesday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. He was 56.
Mr. Welsh was born in Baltimore and spent his entire life in Dundalk. He was a 1968 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Irvington and earned a bachelor's degree in economics and political science from what is now Towson University in 1972.

A Democrat at the time, Mr. Welsh was elected to the House of Delegates in 1974 and served there until 1979.

He was secretary of the Baltimore County delegation from 1977 to 1979, and was a state senator from 1979 to 1983.

In the early 1990s, Mr. Welsh switched his political affiliation to the Republican Party.

He was a co-founder in 1999 with Sen. E.J. Pipkin, an Eastern Shore Republican, of Citizens Against Open Bay Dumping.

The organization was established to fight state plans for dumping dredge spoil from shipping channels in the vicinity of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

"He was very proud of that," said his sister, Nancy E. Johnson of Perry Hall.

Mr. Welsh, who was a certified real estate broker and certified residential specialist, was a graduate of the Realtor Institute.

He began his career with Coldwell Banker/Russell T. Baker in 1982 as a sales associate. He later held managerial positions with Coldwell Banker; O'Conor, Piper & Flynn; and Re/Max Acclaimed before establishing Patrick T. Welsh & Associates in 2002.

Mr. Welsh had been president and a board member of the Greater Baltimore Board of Realtors.

Since 2003, he had been director of career development for Prudential Carruthers Realtors in Severna Park.

Mr. Welsh was an avid Orioles fan and coin collector.

"He also loved attending Jimmy Buffett concerts," his sister said.

Mr. Welsh was a communicant of St. Rita Roman Catholic Church, 2907 Dunleer Road, Dundalk, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Also surviving are his wife of two years, Jocelyn Mejorda; three sons, Patrick T. Welsh II of Rodgers Forge, Emmanuel Welsh and Jose Welsh, both of Dundalk; a stepson, James Cristello of Georgetown, S.C.; a brother, Richard D. Welsh of Ellicott City; and two grandchildren. Earlier marriages to the former Marcy Mary Schultz and Gussie Jones ended in divorce.
