First Lady of Maryland, 1967-1969


Elinor Judefind Agnew is the wife of Spiro T. Agnew (b. 1918), the fifty-fifth governor of Maryland, serving in office from 1967-1969. Born in Baltimore, she met her future husband in 1940 when both worked for the Maryland Casualty Company and married him two years later on May 27, 1942. The Agnews have four children, Pamela, James Rand, Susan, and Kimberly. Mrs. Agnew, known as Judy, has been active in many civic organizations including the Women's Civic League, the auxiliary of the Kiwanis Club, and Girl Scouts. She was honored as Maryland's Most Distinguished Woman by the Women's Advertising Club of Baltimore in 1972.1
